What is Lotus (Birsfoot Trefoil)
Scientific Name: Lotus corniculatus
Birsfoot Trefoil is a type of legume hay as it is a perennial legume that is cut, dried, and then stored as hay for fodder and livestock. It is a high quality forage similar to lucerne but does not cause bloat in ruminant animals.

Dried birdsfoot trefoil hay offers horses high-quality, non-bloating forage due to its condensed tannins. Tannins in hay, particularly from forages like sainfoin (common in Australia), can improve protein absorption and utilization, reduce digestive gas and ammonia, and offer potential parasite control for horses. They also increase chewing time, leading to more saliva production, which promotes gastrointestinal health.
